2017 : Lumbricus terrestris

Earthworm

ABOUT • POSTER • GALLERY • MUSIC

Earthworms not only “maintain” the soil but also serve as a food source for a wide variety of animals, including vertebrates (ranging from wild boars to moles) and various invertebrates. The greatest diversity and abundance of earthworms have been observed in river and lake floodplains — wetlands that are regularly flooded. For this reason, the 2017 Nature Concerthall venues were chosen in floodplain meadows. These meadows are also home to endangered birds, such as black-tailed godwits, which feed almost exclusively on earthworms. There is a direct link between the distribution of godwits and the loose soils of floodplain wetlands.

In Latvia, there are 13 species of earthworms, but not all can be found in every type of soil, as they have adapted — or specialised — for life in sandy, acidic, or humus-rich soils. Interestingly, earthworms, like lizards, can regenerate lost body segments. Their reproduction is also fascinating, as earthworms possess both male and female reproductive organs within their bodies.

Through their activity, earthworms improve soil aeration and enrich it with nutrients, leaving behind small “soil pellets” on the surface. By getting to know the mighty earthworm, we also gain insight into the underground world — its insects, larvae, and worms.
