Fire-bellied toad

The red-bellied toad is a very rare amphibian in Latvia. It can be found only in the southern part of Latvia. Its belly is black with red, orange and orange-yellow spots. It is a species that likes to live in and near the water. Its feeding and breeding biotops are small or partially-dried out ponds, ditches, small lagoons of ponds with a clay base and with abundant vegetation and lots of sun. The biotope for its hibernation is the burrows of rodents and moles, old tree stumps and basements. The red-bellied toad feeds on mosquito larvae, mollusks , water mites , earthworms , water beetle larvae and tadpoles. It hatches 80-200 eggs in the water. Tadpoles live in the water until their metamorphosis when they migrate to other bodies of water. Their reach reproductivity in their third year.
