Iam a biologist. Working for 25 years in national governance structures on nature conservation – currently as the Head of the Nature Conservation Agency of Latvia. I have a very diverse knowledge on nature conservation, values, processes and consequences, however above all throughout the years, that which is closest to my heart is lichen – these beautiful, unique, interesting living organisms. A number of them, if present, prove indications of biological diversity and yet others can determine the level of air quality as they are great air quality bioindicators. By using this particular nature of the lichen, I have developed the air quality maps for 12 cities and have developed a methodology via which schoolchildren and other interested people can prepare air quality maps. This method is used for public monitoring system in Latvia. I am truely happy that we can get the public interested in things, to give them knowledge and thus the motto of the Nature Conservation Agency is – Let’s go into nature with understanding!
