About

The Nature Concerthall – method for public awareness raising which has been tested and practiced in over 17 municipalities in Latvia over 10 years and shows that it is possible, through a specially targeted, interactive and multi-disciplinary approach to attract many thousands of people from different backgrounds, to change perception on the importance of sustainable development and to motivate them to introduce change.
Each year a specific species is selected as the year’s mascot or hero through which the event is created. The species dictates the development of the event in terms of: i) the location selected so that audiences can see the element first-hand; ii) the music which each year is created anew in line with the species’ habitat, behaviour, evolution; iii) the interactive workshops crafted by that year’s key scientists/researchers to showcase the species up close.
Nature concerthall (n.) – 1. the symbiosis of nature, music, science, visual art and poetry; 2. an interactive, educational event on nature; 3. an event that occurs in the summer in a previously undiscovered niche in nature; 4. an ambience event conducted in the open-air.

It’s no coincidence that the first Dabas koncertzāle took place in the North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve. Globally, biosphere reserves are places where the economic activities of people are conducted alongside and in harmony with nature protection activities. Dabas koncertzāle continues to organize its events in very close collaboration with not only the North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve, but with the Nature Conservation Agency of Latvia as a whole. As the main agency responsible for nature conservation in Latvia, its team’s input every year it vital to our success and their information platform creates continuity on information generated from our events.

Dabas koncertzāle is a miracle in my world. The idea was born in a cafe in Old Riga. Before ten years I thought that I would not learn anything new but as it turns out that was another one of my conceits. The music of Dabas koncertzāle is our doubts each year about whether we can again find a way to surprise ourselves and then everyone else. And it is not just about the music. More and more us musicians become less important that our small Nature hero each year, who becomes of central importance. All musicians, scientists, producers, artists and architects bow to him because this hero from nature it that from who we learn about the world. That is our Teacher. And that is how, each year we fall in love with our teacher and each year, from scratch, I fall in love with Dabas koncertzāle again.

aigars

Aigars Voitišķis

Musician and song writer. I have been with Nature Concerthall from its inception and continue to this very day. If someone would ask me what Dabas koncertzāle means to me and why I am here? My answer is – it’s the feeling of Homeland: our forests, our fields, rivers, the sky above us, our birds, animals, bugs and – in the middle of it all – I also stand together with my fellow musicians.
I play guitar, mandolin, I have played and continue to play in bands such as Jumprava, Lādezers, Jauns Mēness, Pārcēlāji. I’ve written more than 300 songs, music for 3 theatre productions and 2 documentaries. I also compose music for the children’s project “Brīnumskapis” (Wardrobe of wonder).

I have also co-authored music for several theatre performances in Dailes theater as well as for contemporary dance performances by Olga Zitluhina. In 2001 my first solo album Zenithsign was released. Second album Concert for 7 Synthesizers was released in 2013 and has received the Latvian Music Recording Award, Zelta Mikrofons as the Best Electronic Album 2013. My main occupation is a musician and I am very thankful to God for this, because this is the profession that I dreamed for myself since I was a child – a drummer. For music to move me, it needs to be emotionally fulfilling. I am grateful that my creative path lead me to meet up with wonderful people and colleagues. I also am proud of my great family that alway supports me. Music is a wonderful thing with which you can travel in time and place, it unites, is complicated and simple all at the same time.

I am the head of the Nature Education Centre “Ziemeļvidzeme”at the Nature Conservation Agency in Latvia. I have experience working with local communities since 1995. I have introduced an innovative approach of nature and environmental monitoring system in Latvia. Through cooperation with scientists and the public, a scientifically precise and useful, as well as easily understood and applied methodology of environmental indicators was established. I organise and lead the theoretical and practical seminars for various target audiences. I write and implement projects on environmental topics.
In Dabas koncertzāle, by cooperating with researchers and scientists, I develop the content and methodological materials for the scientific workstations each year so that the audience can gain knowledge, skills and practices in an interactive way to recognize and see things related to each year’s target species in nature. I attract and work with the volunteers that are instrumental in running the scientific workstations during the events.

The preparation of information, interpretation and dissemination are my every day tasks at the Nature Protection Agency in Latvia. This has resulted in many different informative, reference and presentation materials both in event and in classes for children and adults. I deal with very similar things in the Dabas koncertzāle team from its inception. Together with my colleagues, I take concrete scientific facts, materials and ideas and transform them into visual characters, simple models, schemes, games and even toys in order to show the educational part of the Dabas koncertzāle – through the interactive workstations and laboratories. I also love to photograph and am the main eyes through which the Dabas koncertzāle events have been captured over the years, part of which you see on this webpage.

Nature Concerthall is an opportunity to discover oneself and to show others a quaint place in Latvia, to work in a create group of professional and to help implement crazy ideas! I became familiar with biodiversity when studying in the Biology faculty of the University of Latvia. In my free time I enjoy birdwatching and folk-dancing.

When I was a kid I felt best climbing trees in the forest. I could sit there for hours. Today I still use biggest part of my everyday out in the forest, maybe climbing trees less than I used to. I love what I do. Thing that excites me most about Dabas koncertzāle is the feeling of creating something – from the accidental thought to something magical and very often very personal for each of us.

Viktors Keino

Video designer

Video designer of many innovative installations. Viktors finds no boundaries in the forms or materials to work with to create images that compliment and strengthen the experience for the audience of the music and/or words that they accompany. Viktors works in many ways – from small to larger formats (such as a forest-wide ‘screen’ of trees), indoors and outdoors to create the best story.

Lighting designer

When I was invited to participate in “Nature Concerthall” it was a huge challenge because it was something new and something that had never been done before. Although a decade has already passed, each concert is a new, exciting innovation with a lot of new emotions which one cannot gain when creating a theatre production or large rock concerts.

I have designed lightning for the festivals R`n`Rfest (Essen), Positivus (Latvia), OpenAir Tbilisi (Georgia), Weekend fest (Finland), Summer Sound (Latvia), Staro Rīga (Latvia), and the Latvian Eurovision song selection.
I cooperate with the groups Dzelz Vilks, Astro`n`Out, Instrumenti, DDT, Cosmos, Indigo, Laime Pilnīga…
